      Quality Control in Akuna’s Production

By Amin Asadi PhD, Quality Assurance Manager

A product is said to be "high in quality", if it is reliable and functions as expected. Therefore "quality" can be defined as fulfilling a specification or customer requirement, without any defect. "Quality control" then refers to the measures taken to ensure that the produced items are fulfilling the highest possible quality. Akuna Health Products Inc. applies various quality control techniques to improve the quality of the process by reducing its variability. The range of techniques applied to control the product and process quality include several acceptance sampling, quality function deployment (QFD), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).

One of the key methods for controlling quality during production at Akuna Health Products Inc. is acceptance sampling. This method determines whether to accept or reject a lot based on the information obtained from a sample. The application of acceptance sampling allows Akuna to minimize product destruction during inspection and testing, and to increase the inspection quantity and effectiveness. The application of acceptance sampling is commonly used in the manufacturing industry. Furthermore, three samples from each batch are taken from the start, middle and end of the batch, and different analytical tests are applied to those samples. These tests include physical, chemical and microbiological tests. After the test results from the laboratory are received, and if they comply with Akuna’s specifications, it is the role of the Quality Assurance Manager to issue the certificate of analysis, and thereby release the product for sale and distribution.

NPN NUMBERS ON LICENSED HEALTH PRODUCTS

Important information about the quality and safety of the Alveo products you are purchasing:

Akuna’s products including Alveo belong to the category of Natural Health Products (NHPs) that are defined in the Natural Health Products Regulations and regulated by the Natural Health Product Directorate, a division of Health Canada.

Products in this category are strictly regulated to ensure the quality and safety of consumers. Once Health Canada has assessed a product and confirmed it is safe, effective and of high quality, it issues a product licence along with an eight-digit Natural Product Number (NPN), which must appear on the product label. Only products with an NPN are authorized for sale in Canada and anyone distributing products in this category without a valid NPN, may be held liable.

Akuna Health Products Inc. is the license holder and the sole manufacturer of all Akuna premium liquid products. Akuna and Alveo are registered trademarks of Akuna Health Products Inc. This means that only products manufactured in our production facility at 5115 Satellite Dr. in Mississauga, Ontario are authentic Akuna products.

In Canada, Akuna Canada Inc. is the exclusive distributor of Alveo and other licensed Akuna products. Akuna is not responsible and does not guarantee the safety, quality or efficacy of any “Alveo product” that has not been manufactured in its facility. Alveo is currently available in Mint and Grape flavours and packaged in 950 ml and 480 ml glass bottles. Please note that Alveo is not produced in plastic or aluminum bottles or cans.

WHY AKUNA PRODUCTS ARE BOTTLED IN GLASS BOTTLES

Herbs and herbal tinctures are very susceptible to light and temperature. When exposed to direct sunlight herbal tinctures tend to deteriorate and lose their therapeutic properties. This is why in herbal apothecaries you will notice that all the tinctures are often stored in dark glass bottles. Dark amber or brown coloured glass protects contents from damaging UV light.

Furthermore glass is often associated with providing a pure uncontaminated taste because it does not impart any flavours into the liquid it holds. Actually, if you consider the finer things in life such as good wine and beer, glass bottles are the containers of choice. Even many juice and organic beverage manufacturers prefer to produce their products in glass containers in order to preserve the fine taste and quality of their product.

The Alveo formula is made up of various herbal extracts and Akuna refuses to compromise its flavour, quality and efficacy. This is why Alveo is packaged in dark brown bottles despite the higher risk of breakages and higher shipping costs. After all, glass is chemical free, made from natural materials, dishwasher safe and can be reused and recycled. It is the ideal storage solution for the light sensitive compounds contained in Alveo. This is why when stored properly, it can easily and safely be enjoyed for two years past its production date.

Other Akuna premium liquid products are packaged in clear but also glass bottles. They are labelled with full body shrink sleeves in order to preserve their quality and provide a tamper-resistant seal on the product.

Two possible alternates to glass packaging would be plastic or aluminum containers. Let us have a look at why Akuna does not consider these two options for its products. Many plastic, and some metal, vessels contain Bisphenol A also known as BPA. BPA is a human-made chemical linked to breast and prostate cancer, and many more health concerns. Although in recent years, companies have stopped using BPA in production of plastic bottles, plastic is not a natural substance and it can impart chemicals or flavours into foods and liquids. Aluminum reacts with acidic liquids, therefore aluminum bottles have to be lined with an enamel or epoxy that can wear away over time. BPA is often a main ingredient used in the epoxy.

Ensuring the safety and quality of our products is of the highest importance to Akuna. We will not compromise our product for cost or practicality, or for any other reason for that matter. You can be assured that when you purchase our products they have been tested and analyzed time and time again; and finally packaged in the best way possible so that you consume safe and effective high-quality liquid supplements.
